My name is Mike Van Houten, and I am a part-time potter.  I focus mainly upon wheel thrown objects, with my firing technique primarily being Raku. I have discovered that Raku for me is nothing short of what I like to call “Predictable Chaos”! As an artist, you can maintain some aspect of control (application of glaze, decoration, colors) however, you are never too sure of what the exact results just might be. This spontaneous act of heat, smoke and flame is what I find exciting and allows me to never be bored, since no piece will be exactly alike. |
